Our Story

Slough Young Carers is co-ordinated by Aik Saath – Together As One.

The project has been funded by Slough Borough Council, Berkshire Community foundation (SEGRO fund), and the American Women of Berkshire and Surrey.

Slough Young Carers was established in 2014 when a representative from SBC attended one of Aik Saath’s regular volunteering sessions to deliver an awareness-raising presentation. The young people there that evening, many of them young carers themselves, were inspired to do more for Slough’s young carers.

A few weeks later, Slough-based company Airwave ran a dragons-den style challenge for our young volunteers with a final taking place at their central London headquarters. A group of young people put forward a project plan that involved delivering services for young carers. Their project came second in the competition but staff at Airwave were moved by the passion of the young volunteers and donated seed money to start Slough Young Carers.

From the outset, Slough Young Carers has been a co-produced service, led by young carers for young carers.
